How a CCTV system installation proceeds

Consultation, design, cabling, configuration and training. This is exactly what installation looks like when carried out as a network project, not as a weekend job.

The technician installs the cabling for the CCTV system.

Installing a camera system is not a one-afternoon job with a drill. If the system is to work properly. That is, capture what matters, run for years without intervention and be expandable when more spaces are added. It needs to go through the same steps as any network infrastructure: a site survey, design, installation and training. This is how we do it in practice.

1. On-site inspection

First, we physically inspect the property: a house, office, business premises or common areas of a residential building. We check access routes, identify blind spots, assess night-time lighting and determine whether existing network infrastructure is available for connection. The inspection is free and carries no further obligation. The outcome is a preliminary estimate of the number of cameras required and their placement.

2. Design with a fixed price

The site survey results in a written proposal: specific camera positions, their model and resolution, cable routing, location of the recording device (NVR) and storage capacity according to the required retention period. The price is fixed at this stage: no additional charges after installation. Only after the proposal is approved is the implementation date agreed.

3. Cabling and Power over PoE

We power and connect the cameras using a single PoE cable (power and data transmission in the same line), eliminating the need for a separate electrical socket at each camera. We route the cabling as discreetly as possible: through risers, suspended ceilings, existing penetrations and conduit covers. Where drilling cannot be avoided, we use minimum drill diameters and colour-matched trims to ensure any impact on the façade or interior is kept to an absolute minimum.

4. Camera positioning and adjustment

Cameras are not installed simply "on the corner of the building to see outside". Height, tilt and field of view are adjusted so that the camera captures faces or number plates where it matters: typically at entrances, driveways or cashier zones, while avoiding unnecessary recording of neighbouring plots or public pavements. After installation, focus and exposure are fine-tuned on site, not from a desk.

5. System configuration

Next comes the configuration of the recording device: retention period as agreed, detection zones, alerts for motion or recognition of persons and vehicles, user accounts for those who need access to the recordings, and storage encryption. For larger properties, we also implement network segmentation for the camera system from the rest of the network so that cameras and office operations do not interfere with each other.

6. Training and handover

At the end, we sit down with the client to go through both the mobile and desktop applications: how to find a specific recording by time, how to set permissions for additional users, what to do in case of an internet outage (recording continues locally), and who to contact for service. Handover also includes brief documentation, camera layout and access credentials in one place.

Most installations at a detached house or small business premises take one to three days of on-site work. For larger buildings, apartment blocks, hotels, production halls: the implementation is divided into stages so that operations can continue without interruption. In both cases, the same rule applies: less improvisation on site means fewer complications after handover.

What most affects installation duration

Not every installation takes the same amount of time, even with the same number of cameras. The most significant factor extending the duration is the complexity of the cabling route, how many floors or walls the cables must pass through, whether there are existing voids or if new holes need to be drilled, and how accessible the building's technical spaces are. It also matters whether the installation is in an empty property or during normal operation, when work needs to be coordinated with household or business activities. Therefore, the exact implementation date is always confirmed only after an inspection, not estimated over the phone.

Why design is done before installation, not during it

Deciding on camera positions and cable routes only on-site on the day of installation leads to improvised solutions: the camera ends up where the cable was easiest to reach, not where it makes sense for the view. That is why we insist that the design be completed and approved before the technicians arrive. This saves time on-site and, more importantly, prevents subsequent adjustments that would otherwise require a second intervention in the façade or interior.

Servis po instalaci

Installation is not the end of our cooperation. The camera system requires occasional firmware updates, hard drive functionality checks, and possible reconfiguration when building operations change, such as a new entrance being added, a change in the building's owners' association committee, or an expansion of the business premises. For service in Prague, we plan for an on-site visit within 24 hours, and many minor adjustments, such as changing a detection zone or adding a user, can be resolved remotely without the need for a physical visit.
