IP cameras - how they work
The difference between an IP and an analogue camera, what PoE power does, and what to look for before choosing a specific model.
IP vs. analogue
Data over the network, not an analogue signal.
An IP camera sends video as digital data over a network cable (or WiFi) straight to the NVR or the cloud - no separate coaxial cable like older analogue (CVBS) systems.
Most IP cameras use PoE (Power over Ethernet) - one cable carries both power and data. Installation is simpler and cheaper on cabling, especially for properties with several cameras.
What to look for
Five parameters that matter.
- 01
Resolution
To read a face or number plate you need more than plain "HD" - at entrances and tills we recommend 4K or at least 4-8 Mpx.
- 02
Night vision (IR / colour)
Classic IR switches to black-and-white at night. Newer sensors deliver colour footage even at night thanks to better sensitivity and supplementary light.
- 03
Housing rating (IP rating)
For outdoor use you need at least IP66/67 - protection against dust and jetted water.
- 04
Field of view and focal length
A wide-angle camera covers more area but loses detail at the edges. At entrances and tills we choose a narrower angle with more zoom.
- 05
PoE power budget and switch distance
Cameras with IR illumination or heating draw more power - on longer cable runs we also account for signal loss.
Frequently asked questions
Before you contact us.
- Do I need a separate network for cameras at home or at the office?
- It's not required, but for larger installations we recommend a separate VLAN - we assess this during the on-site inspection based on your existing network.
- Can an IP camera connect without a cable?
- Yes, WiFi versions exist, but for reliable continuous recording we prefer wired PoE connections - fewer dropouts and a more stable feed.
- How long does an IP camera last in service?
- A quality IP camera typically lasts several years in normal outdoor use; exact warranty terms depend on the specific manufacturer.
