Smart features and AI detection

What AI in a CCTV system can really do - and where its limits are. No promises the system will not deliver on in practice.

What AI can really do

Object type recognition, not personal identity.

AI detection in a standard CCTV system (UniFi Protect and competing platforms alike) reliably tells that the frame contains a person, a vehicle, a package or an animal - and triggers a notification or recording accordingly.

At entrances and car parks we add number-plate recognition (LPR) - reading a registration plate to log entries or automatically open a barrier.

What it is good for

Fewer false alarms, more targeted notifications.

  • 01

    Filtering out irrelevant recordings

Without AI detection, any motion triggers a recording - wind in a tree, a shadow, a cat. With object-type detection you only record and get alerted for relevant motion.

  • 02

    Notifications tailored to you

You can set it to notify you only about a person at the entrance after 10 pm, not every car passing on the street.

  • 03

    Faster search through the archive

A "people only" or "vehicles only" filter in the app cuts searching for a specific event from hours to minutes.

  • 04

    Automation at entrances (LPR)

A recognised number plate can trigger a barrier to open, or simply log the arrival time - no physical card or staff required.

Where the limits are

It does not recognise a specific person.

Standard CCTV AI cannot tell who specifically is in the frame - only that it is a person. Biometric identification (facial recognition) is a different category of technology with significantly higher GDPR-assessment requirements, and we do not deploy it in standard installations. We discuss the actual scope of AI features for your project specifically - including the impact on retention periods and information duties.

Frequently asked questions

Before you contact us.

Do I need AI detection, or is a plain camera enough?
It depends on the property - a small household may be fine with basic motion detection, while a business or warehouse benefits from AI filtering out false alarms. We discuss this on your specific case.
Can the system recognise a specific person?
Not in a standard installation - it detects the object type (person, vehicle), not identity. Facial recognition is a different, more demanding technology with a higher GDPR impact.
Does LPR work at night or in the rain?
Yes, but accuracy depends on the lighting at the entrance and the camera angle - we account for that in the design, not after installation.
