Outdoor cameras - durability and placement
A facade, driveway or perimeter faces different conditions than an interior. What an outdoor camera needs, and where people most often get the placement wrong.
What an outdoor camera needs
Different conditions than indoors.
An outdoor camera must handle frost, heat, rain and direct sun - in Prague that realistically spans roughly -20°C to +50°C on a facade in summer. That is why we choose housings rated at least IP66/67 and models tested for temperature cycling, not just anything labelled "outdoor" in an online shop.
The second issue is night vision - IR illumination has a limited range, so for longer perimeters we combine several cameras or supplementary lighting rather than relying on one camera advertised with a "30 m range", which in practice means recognisable motion, not a readable face.
Common placement mistakes
What we see most often on site.
- 01
Camera facing into the sun
In the morning or evening, facing the sun the camera only sees a silhouette. The fix is a different angle or a model with better WDR (wide dynamic range).
- 02
The building's own light blinds the sensor
A security light within the camera's field of view overexposes the image at night - the camera and the light need to be designed together, not independently.
- 03
Camera mounted low and within reach
At entrances and ground level it is easy to damage or turn the camera. Mounting height and angle are part of the design, not just "wherever it can be screwed on".
- 04
Cabling run without protection
Outdoor cabling without conduit degrades faster than expected from UV exposure and moisture - and the connection fails sooner as a result.
Frequently asked questions
Before you contact us.
- Can an outdoor camera handle Czech frost and summer heat on a facade?
- Yes, provided we choose a model with the right temperature rating - that is part of the design, not left to chance.
- Does an outdoor camera need cleaning or servicing?
- We recommend wiping the housing occasionally, especially after winter (salt, dust). A functional check once a year is a good idea.
- Can an outdoor camera be powered without an electrician?
- If a PoE cable runs from a switch inside the building, we usually don't need a separate outdoor power connection - we will confirm this during the on-site inspection.

Dealing with an outdoor perimeter or facade?
An on-site inspection shows where a camera would be blinded by the sun or its own light - better before installation than after.
