UniFi Protect - enterprise camera stack

Why UniFi Protect from Ubiquiti is our default choice for businesses, apartment buildings and households - and when an alternative makes sense.

What it is

Network infrastructure, not a camera set from the market.

UniFi Protect is Ubiquiti's recording and management software - the same company that makes network switches and WiFi access points for businesses. Cameras, the NVR (storage) and the mobile app form one ecosystem that runs on your own network.

In practice: the recording stays with you (no mandatory third-party cloud), access is role-based, and the system scales - from five cameras to fifty without switching platforms.

Why it is our standard

Four concrete reasons.

  • 01

    No geopolitical baggage

Hikvision has been on the US Entity List since 2019 and faces restrictions in EU institutions too. Ubiquiti (US) does not carry that problem - for businesses with public contracts or EU compliance needs, that is not a footnote.

  • 02

Encrypted storage on your own network

Recordings never travel to a third-party cloud. The NVR runs on-site, accessible only to people you grant access, with an action log.

  • 03

Integration with WiFi, switches and attendance

If you have or plan a UniFi network, cameras fit into the same management - one app, one login, one supplier.

  • 04

    Scales without switching platforms

A system for 5 cameras and one for 60 cameras across several sites run on the same software - just a different hardware configuration.

When an alternative makes sense

Not every project needs an enterprise stack.

For smaller households or venues with a tightly limited budget, Dahua or Ajax is worth considering - lower upfront cost, fewer AI features and integrations. We always explain the difference on your specific case, not with a generic comparison table.

Frequently asked questions

Before you contact us.

Is UniFi Protect a cloud service?
No. Recordings are stored on an NVR on your own network. The cloud (Ubiquiti account) is only used for remote access via the mobile app, not for storing the recording.
Does it work without internet?
Yes, recording runs locally regardless of internet access. You only need internet for remote viewing and notifications when away from the network.
Is UniFi more expensive than a regular camera from an online shop?
The upfront cost per camera tends to be higher, but it includes the network infrastructure, mobile management and a longer lifespan without needing to switch platforms. We will make a specific comparison for your project.
Does it support AI detection of people and vehicles?
Yes, newer UniFi Protect models handle detection of people, vehicles, packages and number-plate recognition (LPR) directly on the NVR, no extra cloud needed.
